Grant Results: Read on to learn about the achievements
of
several grants
from Spring 2007!
Littlefield
Public Schools –
Spring
2007 grant for $2,000 from the Youth Advisory
Committee

“Before receiving
the calculator grant, Littlefield High School
was using a combination of outdated…graphing calculators…and
scientific calculators…Students had to share calculators
in order to perform necessary mathematical tasks.
Since the first day of school this year, students
have had access to new ‘TI-84 plus' graphing calculators.
There are now enough calculators for each student
to use his or her own without sharing…Without
these calculators, our students would be at a
great disadvantage.”
The 30 new calculators
are also used by high school students taking Chemistry,
can be checked out to take home for use on homework,
and have been used by middle school math students
as well.
North
Central
Michigan College
Native American Youth Camp –
Spring
2007 grant for $3,000 from the Youth Advisory
Committee
The goal of the
four-day camp was to provide Native American students
with exposure to post-secondary education, with
the hope of making a college education a more
realistic and attainable goal, as well as Native
culture and wisdom, to contribute to overall well-being.
The camp hosted 32 junior high students from Emmet
and Charlevoix counties at the NCMC residence
hall. Campers participated in sessions such as
Anishnaabemowin culture, history and language
learning; craft-making; fire-starting; storytelling;
and peace-making.

comments:
“This is the
first time I have gone to a camp…and it was fun!
Hopefully, I can come back next year. It was not
only fun, but it was educational. My favorite
thing to do was…well…everything. I won't forget
the 7 Grandfather teachings (humility, bravery,
honesty, love, wisdom, courage, and patience).”
“I learned
about my heritage. One thing I learned was some
language. I learned it because of a cool game
almost like musical chairs…I never thought it
was going to be so much fun because I didn't know
anyone here, but I made a lot of friends and they
made it seem like it went a lot smoother for me.”
Conservation
Resource Alliance –
Spring
2007 grant for $2,500
Conservation Resource
Alliance was granted $2,500 to help private landowners
manage their lands for wildlife habitat and improved
water quality through the Wild Link Program. The
ultimate goal of the project was to address land
use pressure in Emmet County and prevent
fragmentation of critical wildlife habitat. Through
the Wild Link program, this goal was accomplished
on over 500 acres of prime wildlife habitat adjacent
to publically accessible lands along a major wildlife
corridor. This land is now being professionally
managed for the benefit of current and future
Emmet County residents.
