Youth Advisory Committee - YAC

JOIN THE YAC!!

Each spring we look for 8th or 9th grade youth from Emmet County to join our YAC. The deadline for applications is Monday, May 3, 2010.   Click <<here>> for the application.

Youth Advisory Committee Member Job Description

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) has approximately 25 Emmet County youth from 8 th to 12 th grades. Thanks to a matching grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation was able to establish a Youth Fund (a $1 million dollar endowed fund). The YAC promotes philanthropy and active citizenship, in addition to representing youth in the Emmet County area. Responsibilities of YAC membership include important decision making regarding the distribution of grant dollars to nonprofit organizations serving youth, working well in a group, expressing opinions, listening, and actively participating in monthly meetings from September to May.

Sara Ward, Program Officer at the Community Foundation, and Peter Olson, Director of Allied Health at North Central Michigan College, are advisors to the YAC. Responsibilities to the YAC include coordinating meetings and grant cycles, sharing knowledge of community resources and philanthropy, encouraging good decision-making, and empowering youth.

Youth advisory committee members should demonstrate:

•  Communication Skills – A willingness to listen and be considerate of other's input, and to be willing to share opinions with others.

•  Leadership Skills – The ability to gain the respect and trust of his or her peer group and show empathy and respect for others.

•  Commitment and Availability — Attendance at most meetings.

•  Critical Thinking Skills – The ability to consider the merits and shortcomings of grant proposals within the context of the Community Foundation's priorities.

•  Community Service— The concern for or participation in community service in the past.

•  Openness to Working with Adults— A willingness to respond to adult mentoring efforts.

•  Potential for Personal Growth—The potential YAC member may be at a turning point in his or her development, and can use this experience as a springboard toward a new self-concept. At-risk youth at times are most aware of the needs of county youth and have the most to gain from participating in this type of community service.
